Eretz Israel is our unforgettable historic homeland...The Jews who will it shall achieve their State...And whatever we attempt there for our own benefit will redound mightily and beneficially to the good of all mankind. (Theodor Herzl, DerJudenstaat, 1896)

We offer peace and amity to all the neighbouring states and their peoples, and invite them to cooperate with the independent Jewish nation for the common good of all. The State of Israel is ready to contribute its full share to the peaceful progress and development of the Middle East.
(From Proclamation of the State of Israel, 5 Iyar 5708; 14 May 1948)

With a liberal democratic political system operating under the rule of law, a flourishing market economy producing technological innovation to the benefit of the wider world, and a population as educated and cultured as anywhere in Europe or North America, Israel is a normal Western country with a right to be treated as such in the community of nations.... For the global jihad, Israel may be the first objective. But it will not be the last. (Friends of Israel Initiative)

SNP Boycotter, Spinning Softly (video) - Plus A Call For Whisky A Go Go!

Here's soft-voiced West Dunbartonshire Councillor Jonathan McColl, doing as much spinning as Robert the Bruce's celebrated spider!

Meanwhile, a suggestion that Scottish whisky from their patch of Caledonia be boycotted in retaliation for West Dunbartonshire Council's unconscionable action is catching on:

  4. I found him on facebook and asked him the following;

    "On your video blog you defend your boycott of Israeli goods, could I ask you a couple of questions?

    1. You say that you're protesting Israel's response to terrorism from Hamas. What do you think Israel should do differently? How would you stop Hamas rocket fire?

    2. Many Israelis and their supporters believe that the BBC etc are predudiced against Israel. You said you used news reports to come to your conclusion. Do you think perhaps you're a victim of media bias?

    3. In the recent gaza conflict the civilian casulty figures were 1 civilian killed to 1 combatant. This is the lowest figure of any war in history. The British in Afganistan average 20 civilian deaths to 1 combatant killed. Were you aware of these statistics?

    4. You say that you're only boycotting the Israeli government. When the boycott was initiated a different party was in power in Israel (Kadima). Why then are you boycotting the new Israeli Likud government when Kadima are in opposition? Which Israeli party needs to be elected to cease the boycott?

    5. Turkey currently occupies Kurdistan and northern Cyprus. Your own country occupies Gibralter and the Fawkland Islands. Morocco occupies Western Sahara. What are you doing to protest these and other occupations and wars?"

    Lets see if he answers?

  5. Yes, Hank, he is swimming well out of his depth!

    Anon - fantastic!
    Please tell what answer you get!

  6. He replied;

    "1. This is a point well made. The situation is extremely difficult and I cannot begin to imagine what it is like to live under constant threat of these terrorists. I do not pretend to have the answers to this, but I still think that the killing of innocent people is too high a price to pay.

    2. If this is the case, then perhaps I am. However, publication such as Ynet news online and the Jerusalem post are also extremely bias and since this is the source of many of the emails I have received, perhaps this point can be made in both directions.

    3. I was not aware of these statistics. I did not even realise that the boycott was still in place as it had been so long since it was discussed by Council. The first I knew about it was when I received an anonymous email telling me that I "shouldn't be surprised if I was to find my family in the boot of a burned out car". This was following the lies printed by the Daily Express which told the world we were burning Jewish books. This has not been on our radar for years.

    4. It's not about who is in government, rather their policies.

    5. We do protest other international issues. Please read my statement at www.cllrjmccoll.info/israel

    Thank you for the constructive way in which you have contacted me. Too many of the emails and messages have been filled with rants and abuse.

    To which I replied;

    '"1. This is a point well made. The situation is extremely difficult and I cannot begin to imagine what it is like to live under constant threat of these terrorists. I do not pretend to have the answers to this, but I still think that the killing of innocent people is too high a price to pay."

    -So you have no solution? Israel should just give up and lose? Let the missiles rain down upon it's citizens without consequences? I notice you don't boycott Hamas for instigating the violence? Your solution is illogical and no government on Earth would allow 10,000 missiles to be fired by a neighbour (especially after withdrawing from that territory).

    "2. If this is the case, then perhaps I am. However, publication such as Ynet news online and the Jerusalem post are also extremely bias and since this is the source of many of the emails I have received, perhaps this point can be made in both directions."

    -I disagree but in anycase "two wrongs don't make a right". You've just admitted your own bias.

    "3. I was not aware of these statistics. I did not even realise that the boycott was still in place as it had been so long since it was discussed by Council. The first I knew about it was when I received an anonymous email telling me that I "shouldn't be surprised if I was to find my family in the boot of a burned out car". -So perhaps you should repeal it? Or apply it fairly to other goverments, including your own, with far worse civilian to militant ratios than Israel? Why didn't you boycott Sri Lanka who killed 20,000 civilians (not 700) when they brutally defeated the Tamil Tigers at exactly the same time as the Gaza war? This is why you are guilty of double standards and therefore Judeophobia.

    "4. It's not about who is in government, rather their policies."

    Please outline the policies you mean and what it would take you to cease your boycott?

    "5. We do protest other international issues. Please read my statement at www.cllrjmccoll.info/israel"

    -If you don't apply it to any other conflict and then not even equally then you are Judeophobic. Again, why not boycott "Palestine" for their violence against Israel and incitement of hatred against Jews (eg murdering over 1000 Israelis in the last 10 years which would equal 65,000 Europeans per capita taking EU to Israel populations into account)?'

    *also apologies for the prejudice typo.

  7. I did not realise that he is a young wee lad - born 1982.
    He may yet be teachable.
    Unfortunately, so many of his generation have been raised to see Israel only as an "occupier", and are totally ignorant of the history of the conflict.

    Many thanks for taking the trouble to post that, Anon.

  8. I read his statement as he asked me to do and responded;

    "I read your statement. How can it not be a Judeophobic act when the only country you're boycotting is the world's only Jewish one and you're not boycotting countries involved in far worse occupations, wars etc:

    Iran; occupation of Kurdistan, persecution of the Bahai faith and gays, suppression of democratic protesters, persecution of women.

    Syria; occupation of Kurdistan, killing of lebanese politicians, brutal suppression of pro-democracy protesters killing at least 1000 in the last few weeks,

    Russia; occupation and bombing of Chechnya, invasion and occupation of Georgia last year,

    Turkey; invasion of Iraq and murder of 100s of Kurds, occupation of Kurdistan and persecution of Kurds, occupation of Northern Cyprus.

    China; occupation of Tibet and Uyghur.

    Morocco; the occupation and enslavement of 50% of the population in Western Sahara, occupied since the '70s.

    Sudan; genocide in Dafor and against the christian south of the country.

    Sri Lanka; Occupation of the Tamils. India; Occupation of Jammu and kashmir. The list goes on and on).

    Congo; 5 million deaths in the last 20 years.

    Algeria; 150,000 deaths in the last 10 years.

    Yemen; brutal suppression of political oppostion, civil war with 250,000 refugees in the last year.

    Why then is Israel alone singled out? Why do you not boycott Palestine for instigating Judeophobia in text books, paying the salaries of terrorists, as well as the actual terrorists ruling in the case of Hamas in Gaza and Fatah (the al asqua matyrs brigade) in the West bank?

    Israel withdrew unconditionally from Gaza like you Europeans demanded. In return all Israel got was rocket attacks and still you Europeans criticise Israel while failing to hold the Palestinians to the same standard. Why then would Israel withdraw from anymore territory when effectively it means any future violence from the Palestinians using that territory as a launching pad will only be met with indifference from Europeans and criticism of the defender; Israel?

    Surely if you boycotted the Palestinians for launching the rocket attacks this might not only prevent them but also encourage Israel that withdrawing from more territory meant support from other democracies rather than perverse criticismt. You are rewarding the terrorists and attacking the victims. Israel will now be forced by you and others to withdraw from the Westbank and East Jerusalem and the palestinians will only be emboldened by this to launch more attacks from those areas (as both the Fatah and Hamas charters still say openly their goal is to liberate all of Palestine eg Israel) because their actions face no consequences. You have proven in your responses that Israel will be found guilty by you no matter how humanely it defends itself. This will ultimately just lead to more war and suffering on both sides. I just cannot follow your logic."

  14. Maybe it's because people think Israel is rather violent. Which it is. I support the existence of Israel, but it is an aggressive country in the Middle East, and attacks its neighbours (and internal Arab population) on a regular basis. There's no excuse for much of that, in fact Jewish people should protest at Israel's behaviour.
