People like Australia's most widely read columnist Andrew Bolt, who today absolutely demolishes preposterous claims by Islam's apologists, following this weekend's airing of an embarassing (to Islam and its leftist allies) Hizb ut-Tahrir video, that violence against women in Islam is not allowed:

'Sure [he concludes], most Muslims probably oppose domestic violence, and many imams say other passages of the Koran recommend mercy. But I’d suggest most also know Mohamed gave men control over their wives and let them beat the disobedient, which is exactly what Keysar Trad, head of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, conceded in an interview with me earlier this year.

Trad confirmed that beating wives was “step three” after counselling, but urged: “Before you even consider using your hand, before you consider an act of violence, have you checked box No. 1?”

But when you point all this out, quoting the Koran, apologists protest.

Silma Ihram, a convert from the Australian Muslim Women’s Association, even claimed on Sky News we had “no right” to quote the Koran like this: “That is for a scholar to do and not for you or me.”

More evasion, I’m afraid. You see, the most authoritative scholars confirm the Koran’s plain words.

Take Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, head of the International Union of Muslim Scholars: “If the husband senses that feelings of disobedience and rebelliousness are rising against him in his wife”, he should counsel her or stop sleeping with her. But “if this approach fails, it is permissible for him to beat her lightly with his hands, avoiding her face and other sensitive areas”.

Or take Sheik Ahmad al-Tayyeb, Grand Mufti of the Egypt’s famed Al-Azhar Mosque and voted the “most influential Muslim in the world” by the Muslim 500 magazine: “With regard to wife beating ... in a nutshell, it appeared as part of a program to reform the wife …

“By Allah, even if only one woman out of a million can be reformed by light beatings ... It’s not really beating, it’s more like punching ...

“It’s like shoving or poking her. That’s what it is.”

I’m glad apologists say that’s not how they understand the Koran, but they shouldn’t pretend that’s not what Mohamed preached.

Otherwise, it seems they’re fooling themselves … or us.'

My Tuesday post on Elder of Ziyon this week concerns the hypocritical and outrageous near-silence of Western feministas concerning the sex attacks on women in Germany and elsewhere on the European continent at the hands of mainly Muslim men, so I won't reprise here the views I've given there.

However, I'd like to call attention to the video below, which abhors the importation into Europe (take heed while there's still time, Australasia and North America) of men from a culture and a region in which loathsome contempt for and brutal maltreatment of women is entrenched.

The Palestinian  Arabs do not emerge from this video as blameless in this regard, yet, bizarrely, swathes of the Western "feminist" movement have declared anti-Israel activism a feminist issue.  A mad, mad world indeed.

As Professor Phyllis Chesler, who has personal experience of living in a Muslim society, writes inter alia, in a must-read piece, 'mass public gang rapes represent the normalization of "Islamist" ways and are also another face of jihad':

Muslims in Sudan and Nigeria have perpetrated similar horrific attacks upon Christian, animist, and Muslim women. There are other urgent lessons to be learned from the misogyny glimpsed in the above video, and seen in Cologne and elsewhere on New Year's Eve, very crucially the insanity of permitting a prevalence of young unattached Muslim male 'migrants and asylum seekers' to enter Europe in enormous numbers, many of whom, through sexual predation, are making life miserable for women and children fleeing to Europe the Middle East as well as for non-Muslim women.

Professor Valerie Hudson, a Texas A&M University professor, said gender imbalances could cause serious problems in the community. 

She said societies where men outnumbered women were more susceptible to higher levels of violence, insurgence and mistreatment of women....

 "What we have found uniformly [in societies where men outnumber women] is a rise in crime, particularly violent crime, property crime, crime against women." ....

"We also see much more ease of recruitment into criminal gangs, or quasi-rebel/social movement-type gangs.

"We also see across the board a more constrained lifestyle for women and there's also a significant rise in demand for trafficked women, either as 'brides' or prostitutes." ....

Professor Hudson said her colleague Andrea den Boer, from the University of Kent, was doing her own research on Germany's gender ratio.

"[Dr den Boer] found that the sex ratio alteration in the young adult population, according to her ... preliminary calculations [is] looking also to be abnormal at about 114 boys of that age for every 100 girls," she said....

"Speaking as an American who has studied global gender issues for a long, long time, all of us look to northern and north-western Europe as an example of cultures that have successfully pursued gender equality," she said.

"To now see folks like the Mayor of Cologne urging women to dress differently, to behave differently, that there may be certain 'no-go areas' for women, I think is tragic....'

As the Australian scholar of Islam Dr Mark Durie observes in concluding an excellent article on Islamic sex slavery,

'It is not a sign of tolerance when free people deliberately silence themselves about the ideological drivers of sex trafficking. The same can also be said of acts of terrorism, such as the world has witnessed over the past week in France, Tunisia and Kuwait.

Until societies are able and willing to have a frank and free discussion of the ideological drivers which motivate acts of terror and abuse, they should not expect to be able to develop effective strategies to contain or wind back such atrocities.

A state of denial is a state of defeat.'

They rant and rave about violence against women, but with honourable exceptions they are shtum when the violence emanates from certain imported "cultures".

By "feminists" I don't only mean the female variety, but  males who view themselves as "progressive," like a certain Reform rabbi who writes in a certain Jewish newspaper today of his pride in his community's commitment to the cause of "refugees and asylum seekers" without any thought of how those "refugees and asylum" seekers regard the female of the species.

Will Shurat Sink Sweden's Ship To Gaza?

It seems the fishing vessel Marianne of Gothenburg, leading this year's flotilla to Gaza stunt, may be heading for a scuppering.

According to a press release just issued in Tel Aviv:

'The Israeli civil rights group, Shurat HaDin-Israel Law Center, has sent a warning letter demanding that the Swedish bank Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB) cease in providing financial services to Free Gaza and Ships to Gaza, which are helping to arrange a flotilla to breach Israel's lawful naval blockade of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.

In particular, SEB holds a maritime lien on the Marianne of Gothenburg, the lead ship in the planned Gaza flotilla. The bank issued a mortgage to the owner of the boat, Charles Bertel Andreasson, a veteran anti-Israel provocateur who has engaged in illegal efforts against the Jewish State in the past.

In a letter to SEB's president and group chief executive, Annika Falkengren, Shurat HaDin's president, Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, made clear that the flotilla ship might be destroyed or confiscated by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and that the Stockholm-based bank is at serious risk of losing its collateral: the boat.

"Additionally, SEB may itself face legal sanction if it continues to provide financial services to Mr. Andreasson and his associates because they provide material support to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization," Ms. Darshan-Leitner said in the letter.

In the coming days, the Marianne of Gothenburg and other ships have announced they plan to attempt to run the Israeli blockade of Gaza and enter into a battle on the seas with the IDF.

This is not [Andreasson's] first attempt to do so," Ms. Darshan-Leitner said in the letter. "On May 31, 2010, a naval flotilla sponsored by persons affiliated with [him] violated Israel’s coastal blockade of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. The ensuing confrontation with the IDF resulted in the deaths of nine armed terrorists and serious injury to several Israeli soldiers."

"Violation of a lawful naval blockade subjects the violating vessel to forcible seizure. It may be lawfully attacked and potentially damaged or destroyed," Ms. Darshan-Leitner said, citing the San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea, 12 June 1994, para. 67.

And "Israel’s naval blockade of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip is lawful," she said, referencing Sir George Palmer, Report of the Secretary General’s Panel of Inquiry on the 31 May 2010 Flotilla Incident (September 2011).

"Please be therefore advised of the significant potential for SEB to lose its collateral in consequence of the mortgagor’s intended unlawful activity," she said.

In addition, Ms. Darshan-Leitner said in the letter, "as a bank also operating in the United States, SEB is subject to American criminal law." U.S. law prohibits U.S. entities from providing support to those who engage in hostile acts against friendly foreign nations.

"Any activity that assists or facilitates this hostile naval expedition, including the provision of financial services to it, could constitute a violation of United States criminal law," she said.

More broadly, she said, "numerous banking and financial institutions that provided financial services and wire transfers to front-charities affiliated with terrorist organizations have been successfully sued by terror victims and their families for aiding and abetting Palestinian terrorism."

And she pointed out in the letter that Swedish law prohibits Swedish citizens from undertaking hostile acts against one foreign power on behalf of another. "Since Sweden has recognized `the State of Palestine' as a foreign power, persons subject to the Swedish crown may not engage in hostile acts on behalf of the de facto government of a portion of this `state' in its conflict with Israel," she said in the letter.

"If SEB knowingly provides financial services to Mr. Andreasson in support of his effort to violate Swedish law, SEB may face criminal and civil liability in consequence of that assistance," she said.'

Islam's Misogyny: Vainly Socking It To The Oxford Union (video)

Here's another speaker against the motion "This House believes Islam is a religion of peace" which took place at the Oxford Union not long ago.

Anne-Marie Waters, an avowed secularist, concentrates much of her argument on the inferiority and oppression of women in Islamic theory and practice.

She's the sole female speaker, and is challenged for the floor by a couple of intimidatory males, but ably stands her ground.

Islam's misogyny was also mentioned by other speakers against the motion.

The motion was carried by 286 votes to 168.  I think this outcome, and the evident trivialisation of her arguments by some in the audience (to judge by the ripples of mirth that can be heard greeting her words about sanctioned violence to wives) speaks volumes about the willingness of appeasers in the West today to suborn the interests of women to "the pernicious notion of Islamophobia" as another speaker against the motion, the splendid Daniel Johnson, put it.

What an insult to women.  What a worry for our daughters and granddaughters.

The Maiden Tribute Of Modern Britain: Sex Traffickers From Misogynistic Lands

"A gang of nine Jewish males from Golders Green – eight English-born and one Israeli – has been convicted of grooming underage non-Jewish girls for sex, the vulnerable teenagers having been lavished with salt beef sandwiches (on rye) and latkes, and plied with Palwin No. 10, at kosher restaurants across North-West London."

Relax, folks! That didn't really happen.  It's just the introduction to a clever Jewish humourist's satire on how the BBC and the Guardian might have reported a certain recent British sex trafficking case  if the perpetrators had been Jews and not Muslims.

The case referred to is the horrific case of eight Lancashire men of Pakistani origin and one from Afghanistan who groomed underage white girls (perhaps as many as forty-seven all told) for sex, raping and beating them and passing them around to be used and abused by gang members (some fifty men are reported to have been involved, and further arrests are expected) is merely the latest and arguably the most well-publicised such case in which the gang members are of  "Asian" origin and and the victims white.

And now, in Carlisle, a takeaway restaurant proprietor of Bangladeshi origin has been convicted of luring four girls, one of them as young as twelve, into prostitution. (He's yet to be sentenced, but has been warned he faces imprisonment for his vile conduct.) [Update: he's got fifteen years.]

In sentencing the Lancashire men to prison terms of between four and ten years, Judge Gerald Clifton remarked that the defendants had treated their girl victims "as though they were worthless and beyond respect".

He added:

"One of the factors leading to that was the fact that they were not part of your community or religion.

Some of you, when arrested, said it [the prosecution] was triggered by race. That is nonsense.

What triggered this prosecution was your lust and greed."

A woman police officer who interviewed the Bangladeshi sex trafficker following his arrest found him "arrogant":

She added:

"I would say that he showed contempt for the girls, he was dismissive of them.

He was disrespectful to me. If I challenged him in any way then he was across the table with fingers [pointing] in my face.

I think that he thought it was a joke to him."

In contrast to Labour MP Keith Vaz, himself of Asian background (his family derives from Goa), who chairs the House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee,and others who cautioned that the issue of race should not be dragged into public discourse about the Rochdale case, Mohammed Shafiq, head of the Manchester-based Ramadhan Foundation, declared (to his credit):

"There is a significant problem for the British Pakistani community, there is an over-representation amongst recent convictions in the crime of on-street grooming, there should be no silence in addressing the issue of race as this is central to the actions of these criminals.

They think that white teenage girls are worthless and can be abused without a second thought; it is this sort of behaviour that is bringing shame on our community.

I urge the police and the councils not to be frightened to address this issue, there is a strong lesson that you cannot ignore race or be over sensitive."

But, strikingly and outrageously, in both the Rochdale and Carlisle cases, when girls who were being victimised told police what was going on, the police, trapped in a culture of political correctness, turned a deaf ear.  Evidently loath to investigate allegations by white girls about non-white men, they quite simply let the victims down.  And thus the perpetrators were able to continue with their wicked acts for several more years with impunity.

Indeed, the fact that the sex traffickers of the white girls are not only non-white but Muslim to boot, has had the BBC and other left-liberal media outlets in a twist, as Telegraph blogs by Ed West and Allison Pearson pungently observe, and as the Biased BBC website amply demonstrates here and here and elsewhere.

Allison Pearson notes, inter alia, of the Rochdale case: 

'You will already have noticed a lot of embarrassed evasiveness about this disgusting case, particularly on the BBC. Turning a blind eye to appalling, illegal practices because “it’s their culture” is what has brought our country to this obscene pass. I have watched it unfolding since I did my teaching practice in 1982 in Southall, west London. I remember being encouraged to “teach the children their own culture” even as I found myself wondering why British Muslim girls couldn’t be taught the enlightened beliefs of the egalitarian land in which they lived.

When it comes to women’s rights, not all cultures are created equal, particularly those whose attitudes are frozen some time in the mid‑14th century. But we weren’t allowed to say that. Actually, we weren’t even allowed to think that. If you inhaled enough toleration of the intolerable, then you were well on your way to the opium of political correctness.

 The layers of denial run so deep that it’s important to try to be clear where we can. First, it is an insult to Hindus, Sikhs and decent, integrated Muslims to classify those brutes under the catch-all title of “Asian males”. All but one are Pakistani Muslims who come from a patriarchal peasant culture that obviously regards young white British girls as easy meat. Those children were considered fair game for degrading sexual acts on an almost industrial scale. The men took a calculated gamble that no one gave a damn about the girls. And you know the worst thing? They were right.

The number of adolescents “passed around” like a congenial hookah pipe by the gang is believed to be more than 50. There were 631 documented cases of abuse over a five-year period, and many will have been too afraid to tell their story. Some may not even be alive to tell it. We will never know the full extent of their pain.

Nazir Afzal, Chief Crown Prosecutor for North West England, who at least had the guts to bring the case to court after social workers and the police turned away for fear of being seen as racist, admitted that “imported cultural baggage” played a role in the crimes. That’s the same baggage that brought quaint customs like forced marriages, honour killing and female genital mutilation to these isles.

Crucially, Mr Afzal says that what defined the convicted men was their attitude to the opposite sex. “They think that women are some lesser beings.'

Tragically for girls and women, that is the state of Britain today.

And not only in Britain but in other parts of Europe in which men from backward tribal societies such as Afghanistan and the rural parts of Pakistan (societies so steeped in primitive misogyny that wives are routinely beaten for producing daughters instead of sons and females are gang-raped at the behest of village elders to atone for the misdeeds of male members of their families) have settled.
