ReplyDeleteWILLIAM COOPER: GENTLE WARRIOR, Standing Up for Australian Aborigines and Persecuted Jews
http://www.foiwa.org.au/node/561
With a 3 chapter sample!
Weird - I couldn't find it by copying that into my browser.
ReplyDeleteI mentioned William Cooper on here a while ago, and without wishing to take anything away from him, I wish Aussie Jews would give Critchley Parker Jr, who tried to found a refugee settlement in Tasmania and died in the attempt, as many kudos as they give William Cooper.
The link still works for me?
DeleteI think Cooper was largely forgotten (not "radical" enough for the black armband brigade) and interest has been revived by Yad Vashem.
"Dadon told The Weekend Australian: "Both Warren and I were following our allocated guide, David Metzler, when we heard him say, 'You Australians should know that a group of Aboriginal people led by William Cooper held in your country the only private protest against the Germans following Kristallnacht'."
Dadon knew about Cooper and his protest, but he found it remarkable to have a guide at Yad Vashem refer to it unprompted."

Re: Parker
Maybe if you've got the time write a wikipedia article, he deserves more than a forest.

Very interesting. Thanks, Ian.
DeleteThe wiki idea is one I'll consider.
