Eretz Israel is our unforgettable historic homeland...The Jews who will it shall achieve their State...And whatever we attempt there for our own benefit will redound mightily and beneficially to the good of all mankind. (Theodor Herzl, DerJudenstaat, 1896)

We offer peace and amity to all the neighbouring states and their peoples, and invite them to cooperate with the independent Jewish nation for the common good of all. The State of Israel is ready to contribute its full share to the peaceful progress and development of the Middle East.
(From Proclamation of the State of Israel, 5 Iyar 5708; 14 May 1948)

With a liberal democratic political system operating under the rule of law, a flourishing market economy producing technological innovation to the benefit of the wider world, and a population as educated and cultured as anywhere in Europe or North America, Israel is a normal Western country with a right to be treated as such in the community of nations.... For the global jihad, Israel may be the first objective. But it will not be the last. (Friends of Israel Initiative)

In Melbourne, Israel-Haters Erect A Poster

Courtesy of "Australians for Palestine", this poster, due to stay for a month, now stares out from a billboard at the corner of City Road and Queensbridge Street just before the Kingsway overpass.

So much for communal harmony in "the world's most liveable city".

So much for truth.

Below: the demonising message close up and personal

    MEDIA RELEASE

The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission has denounced a billboard in Melbourne equating Israel and the former apartheid regime in South Africa.

Dr. Dvir Abramovich, Chair of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamations Commission issued the following statement:

Israel is not an apartheid state and this flawed analogy to the former South African regime does not hold water. In fact, it bears no resemblance the realities of contemporary Israel. This loaded and inflammatory term has been continuously used by Israel’s detractors and enemies to delegitimize the Jewish state and to argue that it promotes vile racial policies similar to those promulgated by the former apartheid government in South Africa. It is important to recall that Israel is one of the most robust and free democracies in the world, protecting the rights of Jews, Muslims and Christians, and that its Arab citizens enjoy full and equal rights before the law .Israel has accepted a two-state solution and self-determination for the Palestinians, and has pursued this outcome through bilateral negotiations, withdrawals and peace treaties. Such actions clearly undermine any accusations that Israel’s objective is to rule over the Palestinian population indefinitely, or persecute and racially segregate Palestinians. As Richard Goldstone, hardly a friend of Israel, has observed, accusing Israel of apartheid “is an unfair and inaccurate slander against Israel, calculated to retard rather than advance peace negotiations.” Moreover, the European Union has deemed equations between Israel and the former regime in South Africa to be an expression and manifestation of modern anti-Semitism because the comparison seeks to undermine Israel’s right to exist.”

    1. I haven't heard of any proposals to post a counter poster. In an Adelaide suburb called Marryatville, and I think in two other place, a huge poster showing those four mischievous maps was erected a year or two ago. I don't think there were counter posters.

    2. daphne could you please try to explain to this citizen of the USA why there might be no response to this hideous poster, isn't it unfotunately possible there might be more of these posters if nothing is done to counter them? do really think they have negative effects for israel's cause

    3. I'm not sure why. I imagine communal thinking is that a slanging match of posters would be counter-productive. They might be taking a leaf out of Anglo-Jewry's leadership approach, which is a "softly softly" one.
Under Isi Leibler's leadership things might have been different, He made aliyah several years ago and is sorely missed. Most leaders are pygmies compared to him.
If Shirlee comes on here she may have some insights.
Meanwhile, here's more on this issue:

  4. From the AFP Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=907468619281745&id=203569976338283:
    AFP'S FREE PALESTINE BILLBOARD REMOVED.
Editor's note: It seems that even the images and words of two of the world's greatest statesmen in support of a free Palestine couldn't stop our banner from being removed. Barely up for 48 hours, Australians for Palestine was told that due to "unprecedented complaints" the decision was taken to remove the banner pending an Advertising Standards Board review. We have just now received an email from the Chief Financial and Operating Officer of oOh! Media in which he advises us of the following:

As a result of the significant number of complaints, we are seeking independent third party advice from legal advisors, the Advertising Standards Board and other authorities to determine the appropriateness of displaying the content, taking into account legal requirements and the implications on the community. This process has already commenced and we will hope to have a determination in the near future.

In the interim, we have taken the decision to suspend the display of the advertisement until we receive this advice. Please note, this was not a decision that we took lightly, but given our preliminary advice on this matter, one we felt was the most appropriate course of action at this time....
We are not giving up. We are waiting to see what determination will be made by the third party authorities and we are also seeking advice. In the meantime, you may wish to support our right to freedom of speech by writing to oOh! Media and asking why the board was taken down before a determination has been made...
