Daphne Anson: Antony Loewenstein

"Perniciously & Dishonestly": The anti-Israel bang of The Drum

Antony Loewenstein is a freelance Australian journalist who has made a name for himself, and a living, spewing propaganda against Israel.

Astonishingly, his book My Israel Question was published by no less a publishing house than the prestigious Melbourne University Press (MUP), headed by Louise Adler (who I believe is or has been a member of his Independent Australian Jewish Voices and is a frequent panellist on the leftwing ABC's answer to the leftwing BBC's Question Time, Q&A.)

"Astonishingly", because the book is a piece of political polemic, a diatribe, not a serious academic work, and in the world of academic publishing Down Under MUP is a leader indeed.

Even hard leftist anti-Zionist Jews condemned Mr Loewenstein's use of this image (featuring then prime minister Julia Gillard, a friend of Israel) on his website a few years ago.

Yesterday, Mr Loewenstein was a panellist on the ABC's The Drum, anchored by Ellen Fanning, which had a segment on "how Israel is reported on".

There was no attempt to balance the panel, and, worse, there was no attempt to explain to viewers that Loewenstein (a longtime favourite of the ABC) has form as a polemicist against Israel.

John Lyons of The Australian told viewers that "foreign correspondents in Israel censor themselves," and Loewenstein got stuck in to the "Israel lobby" which "perniciously and dishonestly" carries on its task. "Israel lobby bullying" soon became the theme of the segment, with Fanning making a half-hearted attempt to enquire about the "Palestinian lobby" before settling back and allowing the anti-Israel bias to continue.

How pernicious and dishonest of the ABC to include Mr Loewenstein on the panel with no counterbalance and no mention of his background as an anti-Israel polemicist.

Dirty Doings Down Under

In some Zionist circles they're dubbed "Theobald Jews" - Jews who make a fetish out of demonising Israel before the non-Jewish world. The term derives from a Jew in medieval England who turned traitor against his people by lying about them to the authorities.

We're all familiar with the type, I suppose. And they exist even in Australia, which has one of the most staunchly pro-Israel of all Diaspora Jewries. In fact, there's a certain thirty-something Australian Jew who's carved out quite a cosy little niche for himself as a Theobald. He calls bloggers like me "whores for Israel" - ironic, really, as a whore sells her favours while Israel has our souls for free. Ironic, too, as he must have made a few handy bucks out of the contentious polemical diatribe against Israel that he wrote a few years ago. That notorious tome was published by a prestigious academic press - which grubbied its own reputation as a result. I guess that's what happens when a publisher's CEO also belongs to a dodgy outfit called Independent Australian Jewish Voices.

But this particular Theobald Jew has now outraged even some of his anti-Zionist Jewish fans. On his blog he pictorially defamed Israel - and downplayed the struggle against Islamic terror - with this vile imagery (provenance unknown). I reproduce this filth here advisedly - I take no pleasure in showing it, but I do want to demonstrate how exceedingly low some Theobald Jews are prepared to sink in their quest to delegitimise and destroy the Jewish State. He was eventually shamed into taking it down - and explained that he had intended no offence and that he now realised that such images should not be given oxygen. Too bad that he let a reference of his own to IDF "stormtroopers" to remain.

He and not quite two score of Aussie Jews - some might best be described knowingly as "as-a-Jews" - have proclaimed that in view of Israeli policies they have waived their "right of return" as laid down by Knesset legislation of 1950. In noting some of the names on the list, it's hard to resist the conclusion that Israel's loss is Israel's gain.

Expose The Lies!

There is a war of lies and deceit on the internet generating unbelievable hate by denigrating and delegitimising the legal rights conferred on the Jewish people by the League of Nations in 1922 and the United Nations in 1945. The idea that there are two narratives on the Arab-Jewish conflict is rubbish. There is only one – the factual truth that details the return of the Jewish people to reconstitute the Jewish National Home in its ancient biblical, ancestral and historic homeland after 3500 years of dispersion with the unanimous endorsement of the nation states then comprising the League of Nations.... The "Apartheid" Slur

The division of Judea and Samaria (West Bank) into three separate areas “A”, “B” and “C” was agreed on by Israel and the PLO pursuant to the Oslo Accords.
95% of the West Bank Arabs live in Areas A and B and their daily lives are under the total administration and control of the PLO since the Palestinian Authority was disbanded by Abbas in January 2013. The PLO has total security control in A and shares security control in B with Israel. Israel has total administrative and security control in C.
Israel is entitled to and will continue to take responsibility for the security of Jews living in the West Bank.
Jews were given the legal right to settle in the West Bank under article 6 of the Mandate for Palestine and article 80 of the UN Charter. They did so for decades until they were driven out in 1947 and not able to return there until 1967.
There are Arab roads only in the West Bank that Jews are not allowed to use. Jews are also forbidden from entering Area “A”. Selling land to Jews is forbidden by the PLO under pain of death. The PLO runs the daily lives of 95% of the West Bank Arabs and Hamas runs the daily lives of 100% of the Gazan Arabs. They have been under occupation – and subjugation – by these two evil groups for the last ten years and given no say in their future or any opportunity to elect others to lead them following the disastrous political decisions of their leaders over the past ten years. Hamas and the PLO do not accept the continued existence of a Jewish State and call for its disappearance.
