In a panel discussion at the University of Leicester earlier this year, hosted by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and chaired by Ismail Patel of Friends of Al Aqsa, on the topic "Is Israel an apartheid state?", Professor Johnson spoke spiritedly in support of Israel, demolishing the canard that Israeli policies resemble those of Apartheid-era South Africa:

    It is also ironic that, whereas the former Labor government abandoned Israel in order to procure Arab support for its candidature to the UN Security Council, the Arabs will have effectively guaranteed the appointment of what will in all likelihood be the most pro-Israel government on the council.
