The Best Of France, The Worst Of France

At left is the non-Jewish French swimmer Fabien Gilot raising his arms in victory following his relay team's Olympic triumph on Sunday and thereby revealing the Hebrew tattoo on his arm that's a tribute to his Jewish step-grandfather, a Holocaust survivor.

And below is a disturbing snippet from a longer article about the great Greek-founded French city of Marseilles, where incidentally a couple of fondly recalled penpals of mine (one Jewish, one Catholic) lived when we were teenagers and a certain Charles de Gaulle governed France.

(I wonder what Sylvie and Nicole are thinking about the current situation in their increasingly islamified native city, where Islamic and socialist elements are apparently locked in an incongruous embrace):
'La Marseillaise, France’s National Anthem, got its name when volunteer revolutionaries from Marseille sang the song. Now Marseille is at the center of a new revolution. The Islamic Revolution. Muslim volunteers from France have been identified training with the Taliban and after Mohammed Merah’s massacre at a Jewish school, a group of Jews in Marseille were attacked by Muslim men shouting, “Vive Mohamed Merah, F— the Jews, Palestine will win.”
As in 1994, Allah Akbar has become the new Marseillaise, replacing the song of the Army of the Republic, with the guttural cry of the Caliphate eager to be born.'
