However, it appears to rely on New Testament interpretations. Therefore pointless in a debate with people locked into Old Testament logic. Which is why I persist that a clear line of inheritance from the original OT promise to Abraham through to the present Israeli state cannot be established. First because the promise was fulfilled, then squandered; second because there are too many other groups better qualified by genealogy. Significant that you have ignored this main argument to quibble with minor side issues. (No doubt you will do so again by focussing on the final paragraph of this post.)
The religious OT argument is dead in the water and you should not continue using it to mislead Christians. That leaves international law, and your "right" to use disproportionate force to "defend" Israel. Good luck with that eminently sensible humanitarian approach!
"Border expansion daily" was, as you assert, an inacurracy by me. Better put as "daily consolidation of Israeli dominance by occupying or settling property previously not under their ownership - as condemned earlier this year by UN security council resolution 218. Approved by all members except USA who vetoed it as unhelpful to the peace process, but added that the criticism of Israel was justified."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971541537715440752.post-43131894524869083272011-09-11T18:31:36.216+10:002011-09-11T18:31:36.216+10:00Expanding its borders daily? I do, however, sniff diversionary tactics....supercessionism is, I find, a whole different debate - nice try! I simply made the point that any title to the land (presently labelled by men as "Israel" and expanding its borders daily) is also valid scripturally for its other longstanding Abrahamic occupants, of any nationality. Religious dogma not based on biblical fact is dangerous. Why use it knowing it's inaccurate? No, I know the answer to that one - it draws badly informed Christians to your support.
Shedding ten times more of your neighbours blood than they do yours is a poor way to live. Making God your justification is worse.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971541537715440752.post-25038097360026115972011-09-10T18:14:33.135+10:002011-09-10T18:14:33.135+10:00Thanks for your comment - I do, however, sniff sup...Thanks for your comment - I do, however, sniff supercessionist theology in it...Daphne Ansonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12297188759548931101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971541537715440752.post-60474244838198007552011-09-10T09:49:57.295+10:002011-09-10T09:49:57.295+10:00New to this site, which seems to be something of a...New to this site, which seems to be something of a mutual admiration society, so we shall see if my post appears.
Scriptural facts: Abraham (Chaldean), Isaac and Jacob were not Jews but of Gentile origin. God only gave the name Israel ("he who fights") to Jacob personally much later. The word "Hebrew" means "foreigner". God fulfilled His vow to give the Promised Land to Abraham's children. They failed repeatedly to honour His gift and quite rightly lost it again. Their refusal (and our guilt-tripped aquiescence) to accept God's will is a source of huge conflict. Constant inter-marriage described throughout the OT clearly demonstrates that the "remnant" who returned to rebuild the Temple were a tiny minority and that there are more descendants of Abraham in Arab countries than in Israel. Converting to Judaism does not alter their genes and make anyone a descendant of Abraham.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971541537715440752.post-73783082654028387292010-09-02T23:24:45.634+10:002010-09-02T23:24:45.634+10:00Thanks for your interesting comment, Minnie. Thanks for your interesting comment, Minnie.Daphne Ansonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12297188759548931101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971541537715440752.post-6520147702388655332010-09-02T21:33:10.680+10:002010-09-02T21:33:10.680+10:00Excellent post, DA - and thanks to Joseph W, whose...Excellent post, DA - and thanks to Joseph W, whose blog directed me to the source. This particular attitude of the Church in Wales is a disturbing development, which I didn't notice until I moved over the Border to live. The ref to Lloyd George illustrates the view I grew up with (and many others, too). It is especially dangerous because insidious &, being the voice of the establishment, gets a hearing.
Johan has said much of what I'd like to say - and better!
Thank you all.Minniehttp://minniebeaniste.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971541537715440752.post-43744514234805909312010-09-02T04:00:44.735+10:002010-09-02T04:00:44.735+10:00Thanks, Joseph. Just for the record, some Quakers (and other Christians), including me, do not detest the existence of Israel simply because we oppose some Israeli policies. Somehow I do understand that some Israelis feel an "existential" threat. Some Israelis have openly advocated being flagrantly arrogant in service of their own defense. In their place I might well do the same--but the rest of the world has every right to judge whether the response to this "existential threat" is proportionate and just.

There are thousands of Israelis who also disagree with these polices. In fact, the debate within Israel is lively and enviable--almost never equaled in the USA for example--in part because of the deep ethical heritage of Judaism.

I'm ready to get into a discussion of the best way to resolve all legitimate interests. Simply because I advocate such a discussion, and don't take it for granted that the most belligerent suggestions now on offer within Israel's leadership circles are the best, doesn't mean I despise Israel's existence. I utterly reject any association with those who do in fact despise Israel's existence. (I am not so sentimental as to believe they don't exist--but limiting THEIR harm is a somewhat separate issue.)

Blessings,

JohanJohan Maurerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13771067774042071617noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971541537715440752.post-85485001059065551962010-09-01T20:01:31.036+10:002010-09-01T20:01:31.036+10:00Indeed, Steve - that seems to have been pogrom and...Indeed, Steve - that seems to have been pogrom and blood libel season in Russia and Romania.Daphne Ansonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12297188759548931101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971541537715440752.post-53517907464947027932010-09-01T19:53:33.094+10:002010-09-01T19:53:33.094+10:00Easter was always a hairy time for my grandparents...Easter was always a hairy time for my grandparents in Tsarist Russia.SteveRnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971541537715440752.post-14455050753362702892010-09-01T19:35:02.021+10:002010-09-01T19:35:02.021+10:00Many thanks, Stuart.
